2.MPENJATI

4.VERNON CROOKES

KZN Wildlife is responsible for an exciting selection of nature reserves along the KZN South Coast, and more and more people are discovering the freedom of packing a tent or hitching up a caravan, and heading out by road to discover some of these special places away from the stresses of the modern world.

KZN’s South Coast, running from Umkomaas to Port Edward, has long been South Africa’s premier coastal playground and holiday destination. Set in beautiful surroundings along the coastline are a selection of exciting KZN Wildlife destinations, all within two hours drive of Durban.

Whether sited inland, high on lush grasslands with views to the sea, or tucked into the vegetation above deep gorges, or found nestling in coastal forests a stones throw from the beach, our coastal resorts provide a tranquil escape for city dwellers, and fun for the whole family. Take a look at these four coastal reserves which you really should not miss visiting while on the South Coast:

1. UMTAMVUNA
is the southern most nature reserve in KwaZulu Natal. It is a botanical paradise, set along a stretch of riverine forest bordered by steep rocky cliffs, with the Umtamvuna River running along it’s border. There are numerous walks through fantastic scenery that weave through the various sections of the reserve. Interesting bird species include breeding Cape Vulture and Fish Eagle, Gurneys Sugarbird, Peregrine Falcon and Crowned Eagle. The trails vary from one to three-hours of walking, or you can enjoy an all-day hike through the hills and valleys. Bushbuck, Serval, Baboon, Samango Monkeys, Blue and Grey Duiker and Common Reedbuck are often seen in this reserve. There is also a sheltered picnic site and a view sight looking out over the scenic Umtamvuna River and Gorge.

2. MPENJATI
is a small scenic coastal reserve where the whole family can have loads of outdoor fun. This reserve has marked out walking trails, open beaches, sand dunes, and a great lagoon for swimming. Both the sea and lagoon are great places to enjoy good fishing. Mpenjati is only 20 km south of Margate, and is made up of a composite system of interlinking wetlands, grasslands, and dune forests which attract a variety of fascinating bird species including a breeding pair of Fish Eagles. An observation platform on both trails overlook the coast. Picnic sites and ablutions are sited along both sides of the lagoon shore.

3. ORIBI GORGE

is a magnificent scenic nature reserve, snugly set at the head of a spectacular river gorge just inland of Port Shepstone. Oribi is the ideal place for a quiet getaway, and offers many delightful walks and self-guided trails. The breathtaking scenery along the Umzimkulwana River Gorge is a photographer's and nature lover's paradise, and numerous idyllic picnic spots on the river banks of the river give hikers a chance to take regular breaks in this spectacular setting. The Oribi Gorge bird list shows 250 recorded species including Cape Vulture, Crowned Eagle, African Finfoot, Ground Hornbill, Knysna Woodpecker, and African Broadbill. Habitats include wooded grassland, rocky cliffs, and evergreen scarp forest fringing fast-flowing streams. This is also home to the Samango Monkey, (Southern Explorer logo) and the Oribi Antelope after which the reserve is named.

The visitors camp commands an awe inspiring view of Oribi Gorge has 2-bed rest huts, a 7-bed chalet and a 10-bed cottage, as well as a campsite.

4. VERNON CROOKES
is a secluded coastal getaway set inland of the KZN South Coast near Umzinto. It’s densely wooded slopes, open grassland ridges, and clear views of the ocean make it the perfect place for getting in touch with nature while having fun in quiet and relaxed surroundings. Amazingly this small and yet delightful coastal reserve has 56 mammal species and some 300 confirmed bird species, including nesting Crowned and Marshall Eagles. A fascinating variety of indigenous flora adds to the natural attractions, and in spring the veldt is alive with colour. Nyengelezi Camp has a 20 bed rustic tree house and five 2 bed rondavels.
