THE KINGDOM OF THE ZULU – WHERE KING SHAKA ONCE RULED

1. Shakaland Experience.

From Durban, AFRICA-O-AFRICA TOURS will take you northwards towards Eshowe and the Nkwaleni Valley where Shakaland lies in wait. The village overlooking the Umhlatuze Lake offers the true Zulu cultural experience and traditions, including pottery, beadwork, beer making and tasting as well as magnificent foot-stomping, ground shaking demonstrations of traditional Zulu dance. Experience the sight of assegai-wielding warriors and share the fascinating secrets of Sangomas (traditional healers). You can also witness the age-old methods of making spears and shields, skills that are to a large extent disappearing. At Shakaland lives one of the few men who still know how to make the broad stabbing spear introduced by King Shaka. A memorable part of the tour is the demonstration of spear throwing as well as stick-fighting demonstrations.

3. Shakaland Information.

Feel the pulsating Rhythm of Africa as you re-live the excitement and romance of the days of Shaka, King of the Zulu tribe, in this authentic recreation of the great kraal overlooking the Umhlatuze lake. Shakaland was originally build as the set for the internationally acclaimed film, Shaka Zulu. It has been converted into a Zulu homestead with thatched beehive houses arranged in a circle around the central cattle kraal, and, while the accommodation is also in beehive houses, all the modern conveniences have been added.

Mealtimes are rather special. The restaurant, which affords some exceptional views over shimmering lake and hills, offers authentic cuisine, the delicacies ranging from uphuthu (maize meal), ubhomubhomu (kidney beans), pumpkin and spinach, to inyama yenkomo (stew) or inyama eyosiwe (grilled meat).
