1. Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve.

A drive through the ceaselessly undulating sugar cane fields and timber forests takes you to the Hluhluwe/ Umfolozi Game Park established in 1895, one of the largest and oldest game parks in Africa and once the private hunting grounds of King Shaka and other Zulu Kings.

The Game Reserve offers an astonishing array of wildlife. It is a “Big Five” Reserve offering black and white rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard and elephant, as well as all the plains animals including species such as red duiker, which are not always as prolific in other reserves. Animals you could see here, and which do not always occur in reserves elsewhere in KwaZulu Natal are the elusive cheetah and endangered wild dog. The range and habitat of wild dog have decreased dramatically in Africa, and today they are a seriously threatened species.

The entire Hluhluwe Region is a bird watcher’s paradise with sightings ranging form the ubiquitous pelicans and flamingos of Lake St Lucia to rarer locals such as Rudd’s Apalis, the pink-throated twin-spot and lemon-breasted canary. The park is the habitat of 300 species of birds. Game drives with knowledgeable tour guides will make your visit to the park, an unforgettable experience.

Cool morning mists lift to unveil the verdant slopes of the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Park, still largely untrampled by streams of visitors.

2. Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve, Info

Hluhluwe-Umfolozi lies in Zululand 260 km up the north coast form Durban. It delivers the big 5 plus all the planes as well as species like nyala and red duiker that are rare in other parts of the country. Equally important, it boasts one of the most diverse habitats on the planet, a unique mix of forest, woodland, savanna and grassland. You will find about 1250 different species of plant and trees here, more than in some entire countries.

Until 1989 the reserve consisted of two separate parks, Hluhluwe in the north and Umfolozi in the south, separated by a fenced corridor, but the fences have since been removed and the park is now operated as a single entity, combining the bush covered hills and the broad plains.

3. White & Black Rhino Projects.

The white rhino was on the brink of extinction. “Operation White Rhino” in the 1960’s won the park world recognition for its white rhino conservation and its specialist game capture unit to relocate rhinos to other African reserves and is currently trying to do the same for the black rhino. Due to poaching the black rhino population dwindled to 2250 from 14 000 in only 10 years. Twenty percent of the remaining black rhino live in this reserve
