A drive through the ceaselessly undulating sugar cane
fields and timber forests takes you to the Hluhluwe/ Umfolozi
Game Park established in 1895, one of the largest and
oldest game parks in Africa and once the private hunting
grounds of King Shaka and other Zulu Kings.
The Game Reserve offers an astonishing array of wildlife.
It is a “Big Five” Reserve offering black
and white rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard and elephant,
as well as all the plains animals including species such
as red duiker, which are not always as prolific in other
reserves. Animals you could see here, and which do not
always occur in reserves elsewhere in KwaZulu Natal are
the elusive cheetah and endangered wild dog. The range
and habitat of wild dog have decreased dramatically in
Africa, and today they are a seriously threatened species.
The entire Hluhluwe Region is a bird watcher’s
paradise with sightings ranging form the ubiquitous pelicans
and flamingos of Lake St Lucia to rarer locals such as
Rudd’s Apalis, the pink-throated twin-spot and lemon-breasted
canary. The park is the habitat of 300 species of birds.
Game drives with knowledgeable tour guides will make your
visit to the park, an unforgettable experience.
